We got to sleep in a bit today and then headed back to Bigoda for some more sightseeing.
As usual, there was a lot of interesting thing to see along the road, both scenery and people moving along the road.
On the way we saw the local troops of baboons who hang out beside the road looking for handouts.
Our excursion today is a hike of the Bigoda Swamp Walk. This was one of the activities that was developed as part of building the tourism in the area. The area is home to a lot of monkey and the monkeys tended to raid the nearby fields. Part of the work includes reimbursing the farmers for crops lost to the monkeys.
The walk was on a good trail and parts were on a boardwalk. So it was mostly shady and level and an easy walk.
We saw a lot of primates including the red tailed monkey,
the red colobus and
the black and white colobus.
We also saw a pretty awesome butterfly.
We also saw several Great Blue Turacos…beautiful birds.
After the walk we headed back to the hotel for a lovely lunch on the deck and an afternoon of leisure.
Mary took a hike
around the grounds and walked up to the swimming pool area (up some stairs and
across a bridge and up more stairs.
On the way back down the stairs she saw a Black and White Casqued hornbill in a tree. They have
pretty amazing beaks.
